A water main burst on Wynnum Rd near Hamilton St in Tingalpa, Brisbane, around 11:45 am on Monday, sending a surge of water across the road and cutting supply to about 45 surrounding properties. Dozens of homes and Tingalpa State School faced a “dribble” of water as crews scrambled to respond.
Work crews from Urban Utilities tackled the 62-year-old pipe, describing the repair as a large and complex job that is expected to continue into Tuesday evening. Outbound lanes remained closed while city-bound traffic was allowed to pass, contributing to ongoing traffic chaos.
A second burst was reported less than an hour later on Abbotsleigh St in Holland Park, prompting investigators to determine whether the two events were connected. The utility explained that burst pipes can result from a range of causes, including ground movement from shifting rainfall patterns, temperature changes, and extreme weather.
At Tingalpa State School, administrators and the P&C Association managed the disruption with practical, student-centered measures. Portable toilets were delivered, and tank water was repurposed for limited toilet use. The Department of Education confirmed the school was open but operating with adjustments: alternative toilet facilities, water tanks, and bottled water access.
The P&C later informed families that some toilets had been converted to tank water and that bottled water was made available for students to refill. While some families opted to keep their children at home, others continued to send them to school with full drink bottles recommended by the school.
Locally, residents described the dwindling supply: one neighbor noted yesterday’s adequate water flow, followed by a dribble today. For road safety, Councilor Lisa Atwood urged caution on detour routes after reports of a pedestrian being struck and a vehicle sideswiped. Authorities hope to reopen the affected road later on Tuesday, but timing remains uncertain due to multiple variables.
