In a captivating display of architectural transformation, Ichizu, designed by coil Kazuteru Matumura Architects, breathes new life into forgotten spaces. This renovation project, nestled in Iguchido, Osaka, showcases a unique approach to preserving history while creating a vibrant community hub.
A Tale of Hidden Treasures
The story begins with two inconspicuous timber outbuildings, hidden behind a family home along the historic Nose Kaido road. These structures, once temporary shelters for those in need, had fallen into disuse and were overgrown, their existence almost forgotten.
Preserving the Past, Embracing the Future
Rather than a complete overhaul, the renovation strategy focused on retaining the physical evidence of time. The rusted corrugated steel cladding, a testament to the property's history, was left untouched. New additions, crafted with timber joinery, stainless steel, and mill-scale steel, seamlessly blend with the weathered originals, creating a harmonious contrast.
Unveiling a Shared Space
The arrival experience mirrors the site's organization, leading visitors through a journey of discovery. From the main house to the storehouse, and finally to the field where the renovated buildings reveal themselves, the spatial depth is preserved. Ichizu now stands as a shared kitchen and gathering place, inviting visitors to connect and rest amidst the adjacent garden.
A Gradual Transformation
What makes this project particularly fascinating is its incremental approach. Instead of a single, grand redevelopment, the architects assigned new purposes to existing structures over time. The field has transformed into Wells Garden, a shared green space, while the street-side storehouse is now Tsuru no Negoto, an antique and vintage clothing shop. This gradual evolution ensures the property's character and history are respected and celebrated.
A Name with Meaning
Ichizu, meaning 'steadfast dedication', encapsulates the project's intention. It reflects a commitment to caring for inherited architecture and adapting it for future generations. This dedication extends to the visual identities and logos developed by Studio coil Kazuteru Matumura Architects for each component of the property.

The client's participation in the Ikeda Women's Network (IWN) capacity-building program and the receipt of an IWN Challenge Grant further emphasize the community-oriented nature of this project.
