A crucial message from Lagos: Our Soil, Our Future!
In a powerful statement, Lagos' Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has urged residents to become guardians of the soil, highlighting its pivotal role in sustaining life and ensuring a resilient future.
"Healthy soils, healthy cities," Wahab emphasized, drawing attention to the fundamental importance of soil for human well-being and the health of our ecosystems.
But here's where it gets controversial: In a bustling city like Lagos, the nerve center of Nigeria's commerce, managing and protecting the soil requires careful planning and a collective effort.
Wahab explained that soil is the foundation for any thriving environment, be it in urban centers or rural communities. It provides essential ecosystem services, supports biodiversity, and ensures food security.
"Without healthy and fertile soil, humanity's ability to sustain life and ensure resilience is severely compromised," he warned.
And this is the part most people miss: Urban agriculture, when done right, can promote food security while maintaining the delicate ecological balance and biodiversity that underpin sustainable living.
However, anthropogenic activities such as deforestation, urbanization, and soil sealing, among others, must be carefully managed to protect the public interest.
Wahab also stressed the importance of continuous greening initiatives in open and urban spaces as a measure to mitigate climate change impacts and promote resilience.
"The soil is our largest carbon pool on land, offering a vital buffer capacity. We must care for this ecosystem and protect our soil, the environment, and the biological processes that sustain life on Earth," he urged.
The commissioner further advised residents to avoid indiscriminate disposal of oil, uncontrolled use of agrochemicals, and improper waste management, as these practices directly impact the quality of soil, water, and other essential elements for human existence.
