Pakistan's Heartbreak: T20 World Cup Exit & Captain's Future in Doubt (2026)

A thrilling twist of fate has sent New Zealand into the T20 World Cup semi-finals, leaving Pakistan's captain on the brink of a heart-wrenching decision.

In a dramatic turn of events, Sri Lanka's narrow defeat of Pakistan on Saturday in Kandy sealed New Zealand's spot in the last four. Pakistan, needing a massive 65-run victory in their final Super Eights match to leapfrog New Zealand on net run rate, fell short, winning by just five runs.

The Cricket World Cup: Where Dreams Are Made and Broken

Sahibzada Farhan, Pakistan's star batsman, hit a century off just 60 balls, his second of the tournament, propelling his team to their highest total ever in a T20 World Cup. However, the target of 212 runs proved insufficient as Sri Lanka, led by captain Dasun Shanaka's unbeaten 76 off 31 balls, fell agonizingly short on 207-6.

Pakistan's hopes rested on keeping Sri Lanka below 148 runs, but Pavan Rathnayake's 58 and Shanaka's heroics dashed those aspirations.

"When I lost the toss, the challenge was set (bowling second due to dew)," reflected Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha. "A very good pitch and a challenging target of 148 or below. We gave it our all."

In a nail-biting finish, Sri Lanka needed six runs off the last ball, but Shanaka, who had hit eight sixes in the match, couldn't connect, leaving Pakistan's dreams unfulfilled.

"It was that close, I could've finished it. Unfortunate, but well bowled, Shaheen," Shanaka conceded.

New Zealand now advances to a probable semi-final clash with South Africa in Kolkata on Wednesday, with a spot in the final at stake.

Spinner Abrar Ahmed shone for Pakistan, taking 3-23 in his four overs.

Pakistan's innings saw Farhan follow up his group-stage century against Namibia with another ton, becoming the first player to score two hundreds in the same T20 World Cup. His opening partner, Fakhar Zaman, contributed 84 off 42 balls.

Farhan's innings included five sixes and nine fours, taking his tournament aggregate to a record-breaking 383 runs, surpassing India's Virat Kohli's 319 in 2014.

Farhan and Zaman's opening partnership of 176 in 15.5 overs set the tone, with Zaman contributing four sixes and nine fours. Farhan reached his century off 59 balls before falling in the final over to Dilshan Madushanka, who was Sri Lanka's best bowler with 3-33.

Pakistan's previous highest score at a T20 World Cup was 201-5 against Bangladesh in Kolkata in 2016.

Captain's Future in Doubt

A disappointed Salman Agha acknowledged his team's "underperformance" in the tournament, but refrained from making an "emotional" decision on his captaincy.

"We've underperformed throughout the tournament," Agha told reporters. "Our exit from the semis is due to our poor decision-making under pressure."

Farhan's outstanding tournament, with two centuries, was a bright spot, but the rest of the batting lineup failed to deliver. Agha himself managed only 60 runs in seven matches.

A rained-out Super Eights opener against New Zealand and a defeat to England left Pakistan needing an unlikely victory over Sri Lanka to progress.

"Head coach Mike Hesson and I take responsibility for selecting the playing eleven," Agha said. "I won't make an immediate decision on stepping down as captain. I need time to decide. Stepping down now would be an emotional decision."

The fate of Pakistan's captaincy hangs in the balance as the team reflects on a tournament filled with both triumph and disappointment.
