PEGASUS lands in Hamburg: Germany’s next-gen SIGINT aircraft kicks off integration (2026)

The Future of Airborne Intelligence Lands in Germany: A New Era Begins

In a significant development, the first aircraft of the PEGASUS program has touched down in Hamburg, marking a pivotal moment for Germany's next-generation airborne SIGINT platform. But here's where it gets controversial...

Unveiling the PEGASUS Program

PEGASUS, or the Persistent German Airborne Surveillance System, is a collaborative effort led by HENSOLDT, a national electromagnetic warfare champion, alongside Lufthansa Technik Defense and Bombardier Defense. This trio aims to provide the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) with cutting-edge airborne signals intelligence capabilities.

The arrival of the first aircraft signifies a transition from the design and development phase in the United States to the critical stage of mission system integration and certification in Germany.

A Decisive Step Towards Operational Capability

Jürgen Halder, Vice President of Airborne SIGINT at HENSOLDT, emphasized the significance of this delivery, stating, "This marks a decisive step towards operational capability. With the aircraft's arrival in Hamburg, we embark on the crucial phase of system integration and qualification."

Collaborative Excellence

Steve Patrick, Vice President of Bombardier Defense, highlighted the role of their high-performing Global aircraft, saying, "We are proud to collaborate with HENSOLDT and Lufthansa Technik to bring this next-generation signals intelligence aircraft to the German Armed Forces."

At Lufthansa Technik in Hamburg, the next steps involve integrating HENSOLDT's Kalaetron Integral SIGINT system, installing the mission cabin, and incorporating additional military and communication systems. The company will also handle both civil and military certification, ensuring a seamless transition into operational use.

A Proud Moment for Lufthansa Technik

Michael von Puttkamer, Vice President of Special Aircraft Services at Lufthansa Technik, expressed his team's pride, "Seeing the PEGASUS aircraft return to Hamburg for their next chapter is a moment of great pride. This milestone initiates an exciting phase where we combine technology, craftsmanship, and special mission expertise to deliver an advanced airborne intelligence platform."

The Role of Each Partner

HENSOLDT acts as the general contractor, overseeing the realization of the PEGASUS weapon system and ground station, as well as training and data analysis capabilities. Lufthansa Technik Defense serves as the prime subcontractor, responsible for procuring and modifying the aircraft and integrating HENSOLDT's reconnaissance system. Bombardier Defense provides the high-performance Global 6000 platform and contributes engineering and flight-testing expertise.

Lufthansa Technik Defense: A Strategic Move

Since 2023, Lufthansa Technik AG has emphasized its strategic decision to expand into the military aircraft sustainment and modification market through its Lufthansa Technik Defense brand. This brand encompasses activities supporting the German Armed Forces and NATO partners, including participation in modernization and procurement programs for the German Air and Naval Forces.

Bombardier Defense: Customized Solutions

Bombardier Defense offers a unique approach, combining their top-performing Challenger and Global aircraft with exceptional engineering and maintenance expertise to create customized solutions. Known for their collaborative and flexible nature, they build long-term partnerships with governments and militaries, collaborating with advanced mission system providers worldwide.

And this is the part most people miss...

The PEGASUS program is not just about technology; it's about the collaboration and expertise of these leading companies. It showcases the potential for innovative defense solutions and the future of airborne intelligence.
