The Pelicans' Late-Game Struggles Continue: A 122-116 Loss to the Short-Handed Nuggets
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The Denver Nuggets, without their star center Nikola Jokic, presented an opportunity for the Pelicans to secure a win. However, the Pelicans once again squandered a late lead, falling to the shorthanded Nuggets by a score of 122-116.
Jamal Murray and Peyton Watson led the Nuggets' comeback, outscoring the Pelicans 16-6 in the final four minutes. Despite the loss, the Pelicans' Trey Murphy III shone with 31 points, maintaining his impressive January form with an average of 31.3 points in the first five games of the new year.
The Pelicans outrebounded the Nuggets, 50-33, but their 14 turnovers compared to Denver's seven proved costly. Saddiq Bey contributed 17 points, Jordan Poole had 16, Zion Williamson scored 12, and Derik Queen and Jeremiah Fears each added 10 points.
The Pelicans' struggles continued at home, dropping their record to 6-18 at the Smoothie King Center. With a chance to turn things around, the team will host the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday night, aiming to halt their recent losing streak.
