UK Economy Shrinks: Is a BOE Rate Cut Imminent? | Economic Analysis Oct-25 (2026)

UK's Economic Slowdown Casts Doubt on BOE's Forecast

The UK economy took an unexpected downturn in the three months leading up to October, according to data released on Friday, which has analysts speculating about potential Bank of England interest rate cuts. This news comes as a surprise, especially given the recent momentum in the economy.

The latest figures show that the economy grew by just 1.1% year-on-year in October, matching the previous month's growth but falling short of the expected 1.4% increase. On a monthly basis, however, the economy contracted by a modest 0.1%, the same as the previous month and below the predicted 0.1% growth. This marks the fourth consecutive month of stagnant growth, indicating a potential slowdown.

The services sector, a key driver of the economy, experienced a decline of 0.3% month-over-month, down from a 0.2% increase in September. This downturn was primarily attributed to sharp drops in wholesale and retail trade, vehicle repairs, and computer programming services. The construction sector also took a hit, falling by 0.6% month-over-month, largely due to a slowdown in private housing projects.

In contrast, the production sector showed resilience, expanding by 1.1% month-over-month, a significant improvement from the previous month's decline. Manufacturing, particularly motor vehicle and trailer production, mining, and energy sectors, contributed to this growth. However, over the three months ending in October, the UK's GDP contracted by 0.1%, marking the first decline since late 2023.

This broad-based weakness has sparked concerns about the uncertainty surrounding potential tax changes, which has negatively impacted business and consumer confidence ahead of the November budget announcement. Market analysts at MBSB have noted that this underperformance raises doubts about the Bank of England's projected 0.3% growth for the fourth quarter of 2025, further strengthening the case for an interest rate cut at their upcoming meeting.
