Yorkshire Dales Wind Farm Battle: Locals vs 'Monster' Turbines (2026)

Yorkshire Dales Anger Sparks Campaign Against a So-Called “Monster” Wind Farm in a Protected Landscape

A group of local residents has banded together to oppose plans for a large wind-farm project intended for the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. If approved, 20 turbines, each around 200 meters tall (about 656 feet), would be erected on a site between Arkengarthdale and Teesdale, near Stang Forest.

The Hope Moor Wind Farm Action Group was formed with the aim of protecting what they describe as a vital wildlife corridor and the region’s skyline from this renewable-energy development.

Campaigners warn the project could be visible from as far as 75 miles away, spanning parts of West Yorkshire, Teesside, Tyneside, and the Lake District. They liken the proposed turbines to twenty copies of London’s Gherkin rising in their backyards.

Fred Olsen Renewables, the company behind the plan, maintains that the wind farm could power around 81,000 homes and businesses. A public consultation process is expected to run throughout 2026, with a formal planning application anticipated in 2027.

The Hope Moor Wind Farm Action Group contends that the project would threaten roughly 130 bird species that inhabit the area. They also argue that peatland in the locality is crucial for carbon storage and broader climate objectives.

By comparison, the Gherkin stands at about 180 meters tall, which would make the turbines roughly 20 meters taller.

The group has gathered roughly 400 supporters on social media so far.

Spokesperson Suzy Wilson told Local Democracy Reporting Service: “While we support renewable energy as a tool against climate change, we oppose projects that cause irreversible harm to ecologically sensitive habitats, peatlands, and ancient woodlands. The proposed site is a thriving wildlife haven and essential for biodiversity. Planning for the site has been ongoing for over a year, but there has been a notable lack of meaningful community engagement.”

On Facebook, Wilson urged locals to “save this sensitive ecological haven.” The site is home to about 130 bird species, many of which are on red or amber lists, and it features a designated prehistoric site, historic rock art, and high-grade peatland—the kind of landscape the group argues is visible for miles and materially important for climate goals.

Fred Olsen Renewables asserts that the turbines would be placed and designed to minimize ecological disruption and to respect the landscape and traditional upland farming practices. A senior project manager noted that “more information will be shared in a public consultation next year,” emphasizing the firm’s commitment to community engagement as a family-run business.

The project is expected to encompass roughly 2,792 acres of land. When first announced in October, North Yorkshire Council’s Yvonne Peacock stressed the importance of ensuring local residents are well informed about the proposals. The initial plans indicate that the final layout and number of turbines would be settled after consultations with Historic England, Natural England, the Environment Agency, and the local community.

Fred Olsen Renewables contends that the design will be “sensitively designed to respect nature, the landscape, and traditional upland land practices.”
